I have a hard time accepting that things "went wrong" for you all things considered but I'd go with heat for a majority of your pain on the day. Dehydration does terrible things to people!

It was great to meet you and good to finally read you report! Nice work and I expect to see you out there for some more temperate races in the future. You should check out the Potomac Heritage Trail 50k. I toyed with the idea of trail shoes, but pretty much all of the runners I talked to told me I didn't need them. Good call on the socks though...hmm. I do look forward to some sweet revenge, it probably won't come until later in the year though.

Bill- If it's too sobering, just remember that this was a "hot" race. The other 50K ...Congrats on your first REAL ultra! The other 50K you did was just a marathon +5 miles! =). Didn't you read the memo about the 50K distance? 50K equals anything between 30 and 34 miles in the Ultra world! I really did enjoy your RR. And you probably would have pulled a sub-5 in better weather conditions. And if you had trail shoes that drain well or drymax socks, your feet would have thanked you. Still a 5:18 and 2nd place finish is pretty darn good for a trail 50K. Great job! We all have some bad days, especially when the weather is bad, but we also have good days, when life isn't so miserable. These miserable days will make the good days so much sweeter. I think you need some sweet revenge on a trail ultra.
